My dad is an immigrant from Australia, so I know firsthand the promise that America holds for families looking for a better life. Immigration is part of our story in Maine and across the country – and it makes us stronger. But our system is broken, and politicians in Washington have failed to fix it for decades.
Here’s what I’ll fight for:
- Require identification for immigration and law enforcement officials. Masked agents are arresting people – many of whom turn out to be in America lawfully – without proof of identification, visible badges, and sometimes even wearing masks to hide their identity. We must end unlawful arrests that occur without due process and warrants, and mandate proper identification for officers involved in immigration activities.
- End indiscriminate mass deportation. No one should live in fear of being torn away from their family, their school, or their community. We must stop cruel raids and inhumane detention practices.
- Create a path to earned citizenship. Millions of people live, work, and raise families here without a way to earn legal status. I’ll support a clear and fair path to earned citizenship.
- Protect workers from exploitation. Corporations shouldn’t be able to exploit immigrant labor by paying poverty wages and denying rights. I’ll crack down on those abuses so all workers are treated with dignity.
- Pair border security with reform. We need both. Smart, effective border security to keep our country safe, and real reform to fix the system. One without the other won’t work.
Immigration reform isn’t just about laws – it’s about people. It’s about families like mine, and about keeping America a place where hard work and hope can build a better future.
