Earlier this year, I became a dad which made this issue all the more urgent to me. Congress has to stop robbing from our kids’ futures to pay for tax breaks for billionaires and corporations. Reckless tax cuts, that Susan Collins has supported, have blown trillion dollar holes in the national deficit without making life any better for hardworking Mainers. My ultramillionaire tax proposal would be a good start to tackling the debt providing the revenue we need to expand access to quality, affordable healthcare, cap child care costs and build more affordable housing.
In Congress, I would support efforts to crack down on tax cheats to reduce the debt without cutting programs Mainers rely on. I also would fight to make sure Medicare continues to have the ability to negotiate drug prices which is estimated to save the federal government $6 billion. There are smart ways we can tackle the debt and lower costs without kicking Mainers off their healthcare or going after the Social Security benefits Mainers have earned.
