Mainers have seen what ICE has become under this administration: an agency that is dangerously out of control and an embarrassment to our country. Masked agents without body cameras chase workers off rooftops, circle bus stops, and detain our neighbors as they leave for work in the morning. In July 2026, ICE agents shot and killed a man in Biddeford, the second fatal shooting involving the agency in a single week. Federal agents who operate without transparency, without accountability, and without respect for due process do not make anyone safer. They terrorize the communities they claim to protect, and they betray everything Maine stands for.
That is why I believe we must abolish ICE and replace it with an agency that answers to the people. Immigration enforcement should operate in the light: agents who identify themselves, wear body cameras, follow due process, and answer to the rule of law instead of any president’s political agenda. A new agency would focus on real threats like fentanyl, trafficking, and violent crime while treating every human being with dignity, because that is what public safety actually looks like.
Susan Collins has watched this agency spiral and offered little more than concerned statements. Maine deserves a senator with the courage to stand up to this administration, demand real accountability, and build an immigration system worthy of our values. In the Senate, that is exactly what I will do.
